Sava (Branislav Trifunović), Petrašin (Igor Đorđević) i Marija (Marija Karan) troje su mladih ljudi koji zajedno provode djetinjstvo u Banatu. Između Save i Marije frcaju ljubavne iskre no u zajedničkoj će ih budućnosti prekinuti rat. Sava i njegov prijatelj Petrašin, također potajno zaljubljen u Mariju, mobilizirani su u vojsku Austro-ugarske monarhije.
Po završetku rata Sava i Marija nastavljaju svoju ljubavnu priču. Ljubavnu idilu razorit će Savina neimaština s kojom se Marija ne može pomiriti. Sava ostavlja Mariju i napušta rodno selo u potrazi za srećom. Posao pronalazi kod obitelji bogatih mlinara čija se kćer Ančica (Kalina Kovačević) zaljubljuje u Savu.
Ančićin otac nudi Savi ruku svoje kćeri, a s njom i veliko obiteljstvo bogatstvo. Prije važne odluke Sava se vraća kući želeći vidjeti Mariju. Ispostavlja se da je njegova prva ljubav umrla rađajući njegovo dijete. O maloj Dunji brine Savin kum i najbolji prijatelj Petrašin koji nikako nije prebolio Marijinu neuzvraćenu ljubav.
Izgubljeni i napušteni, malu Dunju obojica smatraju svojim djetetom, jedinom preostalom vezom sa voljenom im Marijom.
